Christian post reports that South Dakota lawmakers have introduced a bill that would require public schools to display a copy of the Ten Commandments in classrooms, comparable to a measure passed in Louisiana that is being legally challenged. The legislation also requires that a statement describing the historical significance of the Ten Commandments be included and that a display can also include other notable documents, such as the Mayflower Compact and the Declaration of Independence.
In 1980 the US Supreme Court ruled displaying the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms violated the First Amendment. What Louisiana and now South Dakota are doing—and rightly so—is showing that the Ten Commandments are in our history’s DNA. That’s why they are part of the US Supreme Court building, the US Capitol and other federal buildings.
