Pro-freedom Wisconsin legislators proposed a Constitutional Amendment last session that might appear as a referendum on a statewide 2026 ballot. The Amendment would alter Article I, Section 18 of the state Constitution to include a provision that would protect the right of places of worship to remain open during any declared state of emergency. The resolution had a hearing in the Assembly last week. The proposal passed both the senate and the assembly last session and needs to pass again this session before becoming a ballot question.
In 2020 during COVID, our state government tried, and to a large degree succeeded, in controlling our right to gather in places of worship. But it’s not the government’s place to decide when and how this right should be allowed and when it should be trumped by government edicts. This Amendment would provide direct protection from future attacks on this freedom.
