On June 4, Nucleus Genomics, a genetic testing center, launched an IVF genetics optimization software called Nucleus Embryo. The software is supposed to “empower” parents by allowing them to compare the complete genetic makeup of up to 20 embryos. The parents then decide which children live or die based on outward characteristics, intelligence, and physical and emotional risk factors. Kian Sadeghi, the organization’s founder and CEO, expressed his belief that the new technology is the beginning of true preventative care.
This so-called preventative care is a deceitful way to describe this eugenics-based practice. A child’s life isn’t less valuable based on the color of his eyes, her intelligence level, or his or her predisposition to mental or physical illness. This technology takes us quite a way down the slippery slope that ultimately not only devalues human life but destroys it.
