Last week, Texas became the third state to pass a law requiring all public-school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments. Now, students have a daily reminder of this documents’ existence and foundational influence on the formation of the United States. A supporter of the bill, Texas State Senator Phil King, put it well, “Very few documents in the history of Western civilization, and even more so in American history, have had a larger impact on our moral code, and our legal code and just our culture than the Ten Commandments.”
Opponents of this law argue that the requirement is unconstitutional because it prefers one religion over another in public spaces, but displaying this document simply recognizes the biblical heritage that’s foundational to our nation’s history. Imagine the difference in our schools if every Wisconsin classroom displayed the Ten Commandments!
