In another win for children and families, the US Supreme Court ruled last Friday that state laws requiring age verification on pornographic websites do not violate the First Amendment. Currently, 19 states have passed verification laws which force all websites that contain pornography to implement safeguards that prevent minors from seeing their content. The Supreme Court’s decision upholds these current laws and gives other states, including Wisconsin, the opportunity to pass similar legislation protecting children.
Age-verification laws help protect children from harmful content that can negatively impact their lives for years to come. In March, our state’s version of the age-verification bill passed in the State Assembly with bipartisan support. The bill now awaits a vote in the state Senate, after which Governor Evers will have the opportunity to live up to his self-proclaimed “Year of the Kid.”
