The publication called Human Events asked 22 conservative scholars what books they would like every Congressman to read. This list is not just for Congressmen. You would benefit by including them in your summer reading, so I’m going to tell you some of the titles.

The Road to Serfdom, by Friedrich Hayek. This is the classic description of how a centrally planned economy leads inevitably to tyranny, written by a Nobel prize-winning economist.

The Federalist Papers, by Jaines Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. That’s where our Founding Fathers made the case for ratification of the U.S. Constitution and describes the structure of our government.

Free to Choose, by Milton and Rose Friedman explains the value of the free market and shows why big government intervention is a very bad idea.

Economics in One Lesson: The Shortest and Surest Way to Understand Basic Economics, by Henry Hazlitt. This is a readable book that explains economics and debunks popular myths about government intervention in the economy.

The Law, by Frederick Bastiat is a short classic defense of the rights to life, liberty, and property, written in response to 19th-century French socialism.

The Conscience of a Conservative, by Barry Goldwater, a book that addresses topics still relevant today, such as education, the welfare state, civil rights, taxes and spending.

The Pig Book: How Government Wastes Your Money. This book is published every year by Citizens against Government Waste in order to list Congress’s latest “pork-barrel” appropriations.

Mexifornia by Victor Davis Hanson is a compassionate but straightforward look at the problem of illegal immigration.

I suggest that you give this list to the college students you know so they will learn a lot of things they will never learn in college. These books are conservative classics and are essential to a good education.
