Do you know the history of the ERA? The so-called Equal Rights Amendment claimed to propose “equal rights for women.” Now who would oppose that? Well – the devil was the details, and Phyllis Schlafly understood that. Phyllis led a grass roots movement in the 1970s and 80s to defeat the ERA.
She explained that such a constitutional amendment would strip many privileges women already had in U.S. law, and would require outlandish things in the name of “equality” – like abortion solidified in the Constitution and women being drafted to serve in combat. Putting “sex” into the Constitution was bad news morally and legally.
