Wisconsin state representatives are currently seeking sponsors for a series of affordable housing bills to be introduced in the state Assembly. The bills were proposed in response to the current housing crisis in our state and would create an affordable pathway for families to own a home. The current proposals do not include subsidized housing but instead focus on finding available land for subdivision builds, creating a clear legal pathway for individuals to turn existing structures into homes, and starting a revolving loan program for first-time home buyers.
Earlier this year, a report from the Institute for Family Studies found that the shortage of affordable single-family homes in our country has placed an unnecessary burden on young families. If there is an opportunity for our state to ease this burden, we should take it. We hope these bills gain support and make a real difference for Wisconsin families.
