A Kentucky federal court recently ruled in favor of a Christian wedding photographer, Chelsey Nelson, who was sued by the city of Louisville for refusing to photograph same-sex weddings, ultimately ending a six-year legal battle. The court’s decision is another definitive victory for both freedom of speech and freedom of religion for creators across the US. Similar cases tried in New York and Virginia have also affirmed First Amendment rights, setting important precedents for future First Amendment disputes.

Individuals and businesses should never be compelled by state or federal laws to participate in events that violate their religious beliefs. Hopefully, the decisions in this and similar cases will deter state and local governments across the country, including here in Wisconsin, from passing or enforcing laws that infringe on this fundamental right.
