As the FDA openly investigates the harmful effects of the abortion drug Mifepristone, the Administration simultaneously approved a generic version of the drug last week. This move surprised many pro-life advocates, since a recent study found that 11% of women who undergo a chemical abortion experience an adverse effect, which actually prompted the investigation of the drug. Pro-life advocates are calling for the FDA to immediately reverse course.
This approval of the generic version of the abortion drug is a bit mind-blowing—especially the timing. If the FDA wants to prioritize the health and safety of women, it should not only immediately rescind the ok of this generic version, but also reinstate basic safety standards that educate women on the effects of these drugs and ensure medical oversight.
