Recently, the Wisconsin legislature passed, and the governor signed into law, a bill to make the generation of non-consensual online deep fake pornography a felony when created for coercion or harassment. A deep fake is an AI-generated photo of a real person. State Representative Brent Jacobson, author of the Assembly bill, stated, “Act 34 will protect Wisconsinites from bad actors who use emerging technology to blackmail, harass, or intimidate. Our constituents deserve to live without fear of attacks on their reputations and livelihoods.”

As AI technology advances, unfortunately, we have seen it used for evil purposes within our own state. Individuals who use this technology to harass or blackmail others, especially minors, should be held accountable. We hope that making this crime a felony will deter these despicable actions in the future.
