Today we observe the 47th anniversary of the International Women’s Year Conference, known as IWY, which took place in Houston, Texas on November 19 to 21, 1977. That was a $5 million taxpayer-paid media event chaired by the late Bella Abzug and designed to achieve the legislative goals of the radical women’s liberation movement. Those goals were specifically spelled out in four hot-button resolutions adopted by the conference: (1) ratification of the so-called Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to force us into a gender-neutral society; (2) federally funded abortion on demand and included in all privately financed medical services; (3) federally financed and regulated daycare for all children; and ( 4) the entire gay rights agenda.

This IWY conference really revealed to the American people just how radical the feminist agenda was, and it spelled the beginning of the end for their battle to ratify the ERA. The conference had tremendous national publicity in press, radio and television. When the American people saw on their own television screens how radical was the women’s liberation movement, the public responded with a loud “No Way.” Not a single state ratified the Equal Rights Amendment after the Houston conference.

Make no mistake, though: the women’s liberationists, who now call themselves feminists, are still working for those same goals, but the American people by large majorities reject those goals.

There are so many incredible stories from Phyllis Schlafly surrounding the IWY conference in 1977 and her contrasting convention held just a few blocks away! Phyllis and her pro-family advocates filled the Houston Astrodome with 20,000 pro-life, pro-family activists… but the liberal media and historians have swept that story under the rug! At Phyllis Schlafly dot com, you can watch the entire Pro Family rally from Houston 1977, and read all about these defining events that Phyllis called the “Battle of Midway” for the pro-family movement.
