The Florida Board of Education recently made Florida the first state to adopt a declaration committing to education freedom. The declaration was written and adopted in response to falling student test scores in both Math and English Language Arts. Ryan Petty, Chair of Florida’s Board of Education, argued that it will, “challenge us, as leaders, to resist complacency and ensure that Florida remains a national model for academic freedom, parental partnership and educational excellence.”

Florida has set an excellent example for other states, including Wisconsin, to follow in our nation’s effort to improve education. Freedom and parental involvement should be cornerstones of each state’s education system. Wisconsin and every state should pass similar declarations.
