America is about to face a shortage of 18-year-olds, and it could signal a problem for the economy and workforce, The Hechinger Report explains. This demographic cliff has been predicted ever since Americans started having fewer babies due to the recession in 2007. The birth rate never recovered. The beginning effects of this decline will be felt this fall, as college admissions offices notice a sudden drop-off in applications. Every year, the number of 18-year-olds will decrease by hundreds of thousands.
Experts warn that a decline in 18-year-olds now means a massive labor shortage down the line.
