It feels like America has reached fever pitch in the raging culture war between radical Marxists and the rest of us. You and I as Christians and political conservatives may feel worn out. For years or even decades, we’ve been fighting radical gender ideology in our classrooms, DEI in the board rooms, and wokeism from every media outlet. But can I share with you a glimmer of hope that is taking place right now in the United States?
The Bible has long been the best-selling book the world over, but its sales numbers are reaching something of their own fever pitch. According to the book tracker Circana BookScan, Bible sales in 2024 were up 22% through October, compared to less than 1% for all other U.S. print book sales. In fact, that number has been steadily growing ever since the Covid year of 2020. Reports show 9 million Bibles sold in 2019 while yearly sales through October 2024 were already up to 14 million copies.
The question logically follows, what’s driving this massive sales boost? One doesn’t have to look far beyond Bible sales numbers to see that a renewed interest in the spiritual, more specifically in Biblical Christianity, has arrived. There’s no end to famous figures now discussing the Bible and the effects of Christianity upon Western Civilization. From Jordan Peterson to Elon Musk to even Joe Rogan and Richard Dawkins, there is a substantial shift in the conversation around Christianity and culture. Now, there’s certainly a big difference to be made between recognizing Christianity’s good civic results and personally submitting to it as the only source of truth, but on the whole this is a change we should welcome.
The increasing conversation around the Bible, its connection to history, and its Truth for our everyday lives is one worth embracing. The Church should lean into these conversations, regardless of who is leading them or asking the questions. Be prepared! This is a great time for more Bibles in the public square.
