On this day, May 29, 1848, President James Polk signed the Wisconsin “Enabling Act” which made Wisconsin, part of the Northwest Territory, the 30th state of America. Wisconsin Constitution’s preamble captures the motivation of the people when they established our state. It reads, “We, the people of Wisconsin, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, in order to secure its blessings, form a more perfect government, insure domestic tranquility and promote the general welfare, do establish this constitution.”

This incredible reference of being thankful to Almighty God is a real show-stopper—a reminder of our heritage as Wisconsin citizens—that there was a time when our leaders and everyday citizens openly recognized the hand of God in our becoming a free state and nation. We pray for a return to such leaders and citizens to secure our freedoms for coming generations.
