State Representative Christian Phelps has introduced a bill to extend the enrollment cap on Wisconsin’s statewide school voucher program. Phelps stated, quote, “I am dedicated to keeping public funds in our public schools and giving school districts the freedom to provide the best possible public education to the next generation,” end quote. The cap for the statewide voucher program, which is currently at 9% of a school district’s enrollment, is set to expire in the 2026-2027 school year.

In 2023, nearly 6% of Wisconsin students used a voucher to enroll in a private school. Each year this number increases. Extending the cap on the statewide voucher program would rob Wisconsin families of educational freedom. True educational freedom allows all parents to choose the best educational option for their children, regardless of income or zip code.
