Last Thursday, the US Supreme Court sided with Catholic Charities Bureau of Superior in a unanimous decision favoring religious freedom. The Court’s ruling overturned a previous Wisconsin Supreme Court decision that denied the unemployment tax exemption status from the Bureau for, according to the court, ministering outside the scope of religious activity. Thankfully, the US Supreme Court recognized that the government does not have the right to tell a religious entity what is or is not religious activity.

This case sets an important precedent for correctly interpreting our First Amendment rights. The government cannot involve itself in the religious practices of its people or of their religious entities. The US Supreme Court’s decision is not only a win for the Catholic Charities Bureau, but for the future of religious freedom in the United States.
