Most articles published this month for Father’s Day focused on the profound impact fathers have on their children. Flipping the script, Jim Dalrymple, writing for the Institute for Family Studies, instead described how his father was impacted by fatherhood. His father, who has eight children, said, “There’s a sense of purpose when you get married…and you make a commitment to that person, and you have children, and the commitment extends to them. It changes you.” When a man becomes a father, he is entrusted with one of God’s greatest blessings.
In Psalm 127:3 the Psalmist declares, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord. The fruit of the womb a reward.” In a culture that seeks to devalue the honor of parenthood, it’s good to recognize and rehearse that children bring parents irreplaceable meaning and immense blessings. They are truly a gift from God.
