Last week, Little League Baseball released a statement publicly denouncing sports betting on all Little League games and tournaments. Their statement was issued in response to multiple offshore sports betting companies that have side-stepped current US laws prohibiting sports betting in this league. The organization expressed its strong belief that betting has no place in children’s sports, and argued, “no one should be exploiting the success and failures of children playing the game they love for their own personal gain.”
Little League provides an opportunity for children to learn the basics of baseball and grow in character as athletes; this opportunity should never be clouded by the darkness of gambling. Countless studies have confirmed that gambling is bad for communities and families. It certainly has no place in children’s sports.
