(Ryan Hite) Today is the 211th anniversary of the writing our National Anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key in 1814. I want you to hear a special message we found from Phyllis Schlafly in our archives, highlighting the inspiring and overtly religious message from Key that uplifts us and motivates us to be faithful patriots. Here’s Phyllis Schlafly:
(Phyllis Schlafly) Most Americans, we hope, are familiar with the first verse, but today I want to remind you of the words in the fourth verse. I hope the ACLU doesn’t find out that it contains two references to God. The fourth stanza includes our motto “In God we trust,” and praises the Power of God that made and preserved us a nation. Here are the words of the fourth stanza:
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust. “
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
I want to call to your attention a book that would be good gifts for the young people in your family to teach them about our American heritage. It’s called The Patriot’s Handbook by George Grant. It is a citizen’s primer for the young generation. It contains over 100 of the most important writings and documents in American history which our young people should be familiar with, such as Christopher Columbus’s testament of faith, the Mayflower Compact, Paul Revere’s Ride by Longfellow, the Northwest Ordinance, a couple of the Federalist Papers, George Washington’s Farewell Address, the Gettysburg Address, the Monroe Doctrine, of course the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and several patriotic songs including the Star-Spangled Banner, America, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. I’m sure this book is available at your local bookstore. Its title is The Patriot’s Handbook by George Grant.
