The U.S. Department of Education has released its National Assessment of Educational Progress. The report found that among incoming freshman and outgoing seniors math scores have fallen to the lowest numbers recorded since the assessment began in 2005, and reading scores have dropped to the lowest numbers ever recorded. Just last year in Wisconsin, falling test scores caused the Department of Public Instruction to lower what is deemed acceptable test scores and to change the terms measuring student success.

We need change, but not the kind of change DPI is doing. In August, our state was offered a good change via a federal tax-credit that would provide thousands of dollars in education funding for all students, including students in public schools, but Governor Evers says he won’t accept it. In his self-proclaimed “Year of the Kid,” it’s time for Evers to put students first.
