This week, State Representative Nedweski, along with three fellow Republicans, introduced a bill to protect freedom of speech on state-funded college campuses. The bill is in response to a growing number of students across the state who have expressed fear of academic punishment for expressing their religious or political beliefs. Nedweski argues, “College campuses are meant to be marketplaces of ideas where debate sharpens minds and unlocks human potential. We cannot let this marketplace of ideas collapse into a marketplace of fear.”

Education should foster critical thinking and promote the pursuit of truth, not force students to submit to radical ideas out of fear. For too long our state higher-education system has been a vehicle for promoting progressive ideology and stifling disagreement. Hopefully, this bill will spark change in Wisconsin colleges and universities.
