Last week, Democrat state lawmakers announced their plan to reintroduce The Right to Contraception Act. The act, which failed to pass during the last legislative term, would make access to contraception a right in our state, and prohibit any laws, rules, or regulations from passing that would hinder this access. Proponents of the bill argue that contraception is healthcare and should be covered under all insurance plans, including Medicaid.
The idea that access to contraception is in danger unless it’s recognized as a human right presumes the ignorance of Wisconsin citizens. Men and women in our state already have access to contraceptives which they may choose or choose not to use. Clearly, contraception is not a right, and it is not healthcare.
