Institute for Family Studies released new research last week showing a demand for family-friendly apartments in communities across the country. Increased housing prices have made it nearly impossible for young couples to buy their own homes, which, for many, means delaying having children. But researchers found that many couples would start families while living in an apartment, if they could find one with more bedrooms. The Institute calls on local governments to lift regulations that discourage developers from building family-friendly apartments.

Low birth rates, which we’ve had in Wisconsin for over fifty years, have huge implications economically and in many other areas. Both state and local policies—including housing policies—need to incentivize marriage and having children. Doing so will help ensure our communities, state, and nation flourish.
