On Tuesday, the US Supreme Court heard arguments in a case brought by a licensed Colorado Christian therapist, Kaley Chiles, who was barred by state law from counseling children away from unwanted same-sex attraction and gender confusion. Chiles’ legal defense provided by Alliance Defending Freedom, argues the law directly violates her First Amendment right to free speech. Under the current Colorado law, counselors who counsel according to biblical truth can be fined up to $5000 and even lose their counseling license.
These bans on so-called “conversion therapy” have passed in over twenty-four states nationwide. In Wisconsin thanks to a bizarre state supreme court decision, we have a similar restriction in place through an administrative rule. These unfair restrictions on freedom of speech favor a minority ideological agenda at the expense of real help, compassion, and truth.
